Pumpkins!
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:15:50 AM »
Some of you were around last year when my now ex-roommate Shelley and I decided we were going to carve pumpkins.  We started out with the intention of carving 5 (the number of people in the house) and we were talking about how cool it would be if we didn't just have jack-o-lanterns but instead found some awesome patterns we could use.  Our 5 pumpkins, turned into 13 last year, with the help of a site online that offered over 50 usable patterns for those of us who are...artistically challenged.

Last years obsession of pumpkins has transferred to this year.  Our fingers hurt last year, our palms were swollen, and our shoulders killed us, and that was just carving a few pumpkins each.  Yet, like two women with a serious obsession with Halloween, we decided to forget how much it hurts to carve 13 pumpkins, and decided to go for a goal this year.  The site we got the patterns off of, holds a contest every year for the largest amount of stencils used off of their site.  Last years winner was 34, so naturally, we set our goal to be 36 (Just in case someone slipped in with 35).  That's just a little under three times the amount of pumpkins we carved last year.  Do we have the determination to do this?  I asked her.  Of course we do!  Was her reply.  We started Friday afternoon.  I took off this passed weekend just so I would have plenty of time to get these all done.  We decided to go to Karaoke Friday night, so that cut into our pumpkin carving time, then there was soccer Saturday morning and lunch following that.  Sunday was a late start too due to Church, and of course Shelley had school yesterday until 5pm.  So, that left us with this feeling of dread, that we had this goal of 36 (over four days each day we would have to carve 9 pumpkins).  We had mishaps of course, two pumpkins died a horrible death from rot and mold before we could even begin our surgery upon them.  One larger pumpkin met its fate at the hands of Shelley and some rather tough stitches.  Now we're down three pumpkins, and we had only counted on buying 36!  Our count was dismal at best, but we knew, we could do this.  Walmarts sale of Pumpkins on Sunday helped, they slashed the price of pumpkins in half!  Shelleys husband bought 10 more pumpkins.  That's two more than our goal!  So our goal slips from 36 to 38, because why waste two perfectly good pumpkins by not carving the crap out of them?!?  At least, that's our reasoning and thought pattern on it.

While Shelley was at school yesterday, I hollowed out the 10 new pumpkins all by myself.  My shoulder and neck are killing me today, and I'm certainly paying for my obsession with a bruised palm, a swollen thumb, and a huge leaking blister on my middle finger.  As of last night, we had a total of 34 pumpkins done.  We're two shy of our goal, four shy of carving up all 38 of the pumpkins we spent money on.  So yes, after work tonight, I will be heading once more to Shelleys house to stick my hands into a grossly pretty pumpkin, to carve the hell out of it, and make it into a masterpiece.

Anyone want to see what we have thus far?  No problem.

And please don't comment about my Snow White...I know she looks like crap, but I blame the stencil for that.  Any good comments would be appreciated, because we're awfully damned proud of ourselves.  And if you need incentive to look at them...Well...I would seriously hump Shelleys version of Captain Barbossa on a pumpkin...and she would seriously hump my version of Sirius Black from Harry Potter on a pumpkin.  That's how hot they are -rofl- Or...we're just weird.  probably the latter of the two.

WOW!!! The most I've ever done is 3... I admire your fortitude. They all look amazing! I'm carving out my two tonight. I have books of patterns from Pumpkin Masters. I like yours, but you have to pay to get the patterns. *sulks*

I want to see a picture of ALL those pumpkins in front of the house at night... *grin*
