...Love this piece...although the cello part is so simple...eight notes played over and over again until you get bored.  Once at a wedding I simply turned my page to the next piece, and the violist got angry at me...I hissed at her..."I know the piece!"  she cracked up...https://youtu.be/jJRdLZyOU4w

...I actually saw one of these being played, and asked him...since the strings were all 'gut'..."How do you tune this, and play in tune?"  ((Gut strings are very tempermental, they will change shape when exposed to the lights of a stage...why I always go out early and keep tuning my strings.))

He said..."Well, I spend half of my life tuning the damn thing...and the other half playing out of tune."

...I have one of these...can't play it nearly as well as she does.  It has six strings, and is tuned like a guitar.  The strings are pure gut, so they get out of tune easily.  Need to tune between each piece...plus your thighs get tired...there is no end pin.  You may notice that it is shaped like a double bass...because it is from the 'Bass' Family.  The cello is from the 'Violin' Family.  *S*  I like the sound, we had a trio that played the 'viols' for a while, when we three ladies were on gear, it was a very nice sound.

...I studied this work.  My Cello Professor was English, and a World Class performer.  He explained to me that Elgar was very depressed in his later years, and his writings showed it.  Think of "Pomp and Circomstance", (Hells Bells, ask me to spell crythansomen))when Elgar was in his 'National' mood.  After WW1, Elgar became very depressed...this concerto shows it.  It is very difficult to play, but it shows how the cello is so much like the human voice...especially when it rises up and shrieks with pain.  My husband would come over to me at times when I was practicing, and hug me and say..."Please don't keep Pavane crying so much."

.I love the etherial sound of these.  I have a bass one, it looks like a cello.  The bow hand is so different, you actually hold the hair in your hand.  *S*  Reminds me of the Community orchestra I played in.  As Principal cello, I would hand my cello over to my seatmate, and go over to the Conductors stand...he would be off in the wings between pieces, and I would take down the score from the last piece, and set up His next score.  Once, I set the score upside down...the audiance laughed as He set it upright.  He glared at me, and later said..."Do that again, and you will be sitting last chair"
