she took a arrow from the thigh of imogen, it was put there my Master Ubar, she broke the shaft near to the feathers and pushed the arrow through, she cleaned the wound then packed it with cloths soaked in healing herbs befor bandageing it, she gave imogen willow bark and told her that the wound would need changing twice aday for three days

~first day and night after surgery~
Taryn is resting after waking up the following day, she was given broth to drink, along with water, but the broth was a bit rich it seems as she got a bit ill, but a dose of zingiber... Taryn then spent most of the evening going between sleep and being awake...

~second day and night after surgery~
Taryn was told she could have soft foods, she asked for mashed suls with tons of butter, and ramberry juice... she got through nearly half of it before Boris, who got word that when she was done eating would be taken outside, he released a noxious fart into the wagon, to which Taryn lost her appetite and Boris and Leticia got her set up onto a stretcher, and two thralls took her out onto the surgical wagon porch, where she stayed until she fell asleep, to which Boris took back into the wagon for sleep... Her bandages were also changed, they wound on her chest is healing nicely, as is the wound on her right arm, and the stitches on her arm should be ready to be removed tomorrow...

~third day after surgery~
Taryn woke up briefly this afternoon, she complained about her arm itching, but not hungry, just a bit of pain in her chest, the bandages were changed, no infection is setting in, the healer on duty thinks the pain might be from the inside healing, as there was intensive damage inside when she pulled and ripped the stitches out which caused the need for surgery... She went back to sleep, while she was asleep, I, Leticia, removed the stitches in her right arm, there was a bit of redness around the shoulder, though no pus or anything that looks like an infection, but I will keep an eye on it... Also left orders that when she wakes up next, to have someone help her up and walk around a bit, maybe to the porch and have her sitting up for a few ehn, as long as she can handle...

A stranger by the name of Takar came into camp with a wound to his right shoulder, an arrow found it's way there, not sure how, but I was able to remove it, luckily it didn't get near the bone, so I was able to push the arrow through the back, I have packed it with healing herb gauze, and have instructed him to have the gauze replaced twice daily, and if any redness or signs of infection start to show to find a healer and have it checked out... He has also been advised not to partake of any paga or alcoholic drinks until such time as the wound heals...

Taryn was brought to the main fire this night, she was able to walk a distance from her cot to a chair on the surgical wagon porch, she was nearly exhausted by the time she got to the chair, a bit winded, but overall she did very well on her first outing... she is still on soft foods, which to her is mashed suls smothered in butter, and this time she asked for chocolate milk ~smiles~ she ate everything and drank all her milk... she has been dozing off and on while she has been out of the wagon, both on the porch and then at the main fire... the wound is healing nicely, but her right shoulder is starting to show signs of infection... I will be keeping a close eye on it, and have taken to adding green powder when I do dressing changes to her chest, and shoulder...

After the horrific events of last eve, I scarcely know where to begin. Every Healer, Medic and half-trained or even willing hand has been working at a feverish pace to keep up with the constant stream of wounded. Medical supplies are damn near depleted -- there is no valerian, no more willow bark, and I would be shocked to find a single sprig of lavenia at this point. Healing salve is critically low as well, and bandages are being made from whatever materials can be found and rendered sterile.

Last night's casualties were unbelieveably heavy, and many of the wounds were grave indeed. Tuchuks died last eve, and some of the ones who lived would say those were lucky. I cannot begin to document every wound treated, but I can manage to relate at least most of what I did Myself.
My first patient was easily the worst one I treated. The Warrior collapsed at My feet by the main fires, bleeding copiously and holding in his intestines by sheer force of will. Because of the severity of His wounds I was forced to attempt emergency surgery on the spot, with only willow bark to offer Him for pain. General anesthesia was unavailable, and would probably have sent Him into shock in any event. I used one of the cautery irons to seal off the worst bleeders, then black pepper for the lesser ones and plenty of green powder. I snagged a Camp kajira to keep the wound irrigated and the blood blotted away while I worked. I used boskgut sutures to repair and reattach the damaged and in some cases severed muscles and ligaments. Closure was accomplished with boskgut as well except for the outermost skin layer, for which silk was used, along with plenty of bluegrass/agrimony salve. I had two thralls carry the Warrior to the Med wagon for post-op treatment by a more qualified Healer. He will need blood, plenty of it, and will need to be assessed by a full Healer stat.
The second Warrior brought to Me,I was unable to treat. He had taken a barbed arrow behind the ear, which had penetrated into His medulla oblongata and was inoperable. He was breathing but unresponsive. I gave some willow bark to His Woman for Him, and told her to make Him as comfortable as possible. I never learned His name; however, the last sight I had of Him as His Woman sang Him to rest is one that will haunt Me forever.
Next was a lance wound under a Warrior's ribcage; that one will live, though He will be off duty for a few days until His sutures come out. The wound was quite deep but repairable, and no vital organs were irreparably damaged.
Somewhere in the midst of all this, a Camp kajira was brought to Me with a barbed arrowhead embedded in her foot. The arrowhead had been cut out of a wounded Warrior and discarded on the ground, and the slave stepped on it, driving it into her foot. I incised the foot over each of the barbs, removed the arrowhead and stitched her up. She is to remain in the kennel wagon for the next 48 hours unless a suitable crutch can be found for her to get around on light duty until the foot heals.
The last thing I remember from last eve, is a group of three Warriors with assorted lance and arrow wounds, whom I treated as a group with the aid of slaves. All will survive but are restricted to the Med wagon (or equivalent convalescence since the Med wagon is filled well beyond capacity) for at least the next 24 hours.
At least two other Warriors came in dead on their kaiilas, and had to be removed by Shoko and Myself and carried off by slaves to be claimed and sung to rest by Their families. The mounts were so exhausted that neither of Us even got bitten by the temperamental war kaiilas.

As a footnote to last eve's events, I wish to make note of the dedication and dogged determination of at least two of Our non-Healer Sisters: Shoko and Nexhias. Both showed considerable skill in triaging and treating the wounded, and are to be commended for both Their dedication and the efficiency of Their stitchwork in suturing the wounded. Shoko in particular I know had to be ordered to rest for even a moment even at the peak of exhaustion; I noticed because I am the one who ordered Her to rest "or else". I believe that Taryn took similar measures with Nexi.
Both Women have done a truly memorable job in assisting the Healers of Our Home, and I respectfully suggest that both should be more fully trained in the Healing arts, given their obvious dedication and natural talent for the work. It would seem a shame to waste such natural talent.

~entry by Leticia~

Mass casualities came in in waves last night, as Taryn was just put onto light duty as her sutures were removed this morning, she starts PT when the chaos dies down, which should be tomorrow or the day after at the lastest... But as I was giving her a lecture on what she could and couldn't do, it was shortly thrown out of the window when the first wave came in... Taryn started going through the casualities, doing triage, as there isn't much valerian she and I were using it sparingly on those who really needed it, meaning those going into the surgical wagon or needed a small push to pass on in comfort...

The first one I came upon was a warrior with a lance wound to his left thigh, he was holding it close with his hands, and blood was pouring out of the wound, I had to do surgery on the spot, as I gave him some valerian to help with the level of pain he was dealing with, I was able to rinse out the wound with water, then had to use black pepper to stop the gushing of blood from several bleeders from three arteries... Once those were stitched up, I was able to sew the muscles, tendons and ligaments together, then sutured the outside, used a liberal amount of green powder to ward off any infection that might set in due to the location I had to work in, with the dirt and grasses being kicked up by those walking around, then slathered agrimony salve over the stitched wound, then placing a bandage, secured with physician's tape to secure it in place, then I had two thralls place him on a stretcher and take him into the medical wagon... This morning, when I checked on him, he was doing much better, he was also placed on an IV to replenish his blood loss and keep him hydrated...

I worked through most of the night on several more warriors who came in with different wounds, some were taken care of quickly, others were given valerian to ease their journey to the sky... As I worked, the Blue Sky Song was heard all around me...

~entry by Taryn~

As I was being placed on light duty, lectured on what I could and couldn't do, I found the rules were tossed aside as many waves of casualities came into camp, as soon as I could I jumped into the fray, helping those who I could without doing more than I should as I was trying to heed my light duty status, but soon that wasn't a viable option... Boris snapped me out of my thoughts with a warrior, who had an arrow wound to his neck, the arrow was already gone, but the barbed arrow left behind a lot of damage, as my fingers held the bleeding artery closed, I got my healer's bag from george, quickly, I was able to suture the artery close, and on the first try no less, no bleeding was seen after it was sewn up, as I didn't want to hold it together again to restitch it, which would cause a possible stroke, then I was able to suture the inside of his neck, then finally the outside, as I worked, george sprinkled a liberal amount of green powder into the wound, as we both hoped to stop any infection that might try to establish itself inside, then I sutured the external skin closed, george slathered agrimony salve over the stitches and skin surrounding the wound, then a bandage was applied and secured with tape...

I spent the rest of the night going from wounded warrior to warrior, giving valerian to those in desperate need of pain relief, as I was taking note that the supply of valerian was getting down into the critical level and only those who were in the need list going to surgery were getting any, those who were dying and where in pain, were given Lavenia, though even that was running low, as is the willow bark, and dandelion, though dandelion is only used for a different sort of pain, it was found to be effective for those with barbed arrows to the bone... During one of my breaks when I was ordered to sit and rest for at least 30 ehn, I was able to get an inventory of things we are low on...

Silk bandages and rep cloths are down to nearly none, those that are able to be cleaned and reused, are currently being washed and brought back to the medical and surgical wagons when they are washed and dried, many braziers and firebowls have been lit and used to quicken the drying times for the bandages and rep cloths... The following is what we have in inventory for medicine:

Lavenia - very low, 2 containers
Valerian - gone
Willow Bark - gone
Dandelion - low, 7 containers
Blue Grass - low approximately 4 jars
Agrimony Salve (honey based) - low, 5 jars, though I have several kajira working on making more as time allows
Agrimony Salve (kur fat based) - low, 4 jars left, as there is no more kur fat left, we are using mostly honey salve as a base, though I have to talk to Muse or Kelsey, I am thinking we might be able to use Bosk fat, but I am holding off on using that until I check on whether or not it would be feasible or even useful.
Capture scent (used only in the surgical wagon or for when performing surgery) - very low, was able to find only 2 more containers with the liquid, though there might be more in Muse's office
Cayenne Pepper - very low, 2 containers
Chamomile - low, 6 small containers with crushed leaves inside, dated only a hand ago
Green Powder - very very low, 2 jars left
Honey - low, 6 jars left
Arro - good approximately 15 containers
Tubers - low, 5 containers left, date is within the last hand
Zingiber - low 4 jars left

I have lost track of the number of warriors we worked on in the surgery wagon.....capture scent is being used sparingly for anethesia....pain medication is pretty much gone at this point....Muse, myself and the other trained surgeons go from table to table helping each other.....assistant trainers use sewing thread to finish closing the wounds....the boards in the surgical wagon are soaked with blood.....(thinks M*A*S*H)

We lost as many as we saved....and many of them are hanging on by a thread....blood tranfusions are necessary for many and able bodied thralls, warriors and slaves have been brought in to help with the need....

she cleaned up Master Raz's wounds and put some healing salve on each one, she didnt bandage them as she deemed the wounds would heal better in the air, as she was sitting by Master Raz she caught a funny smell, lifting the jar of healing salve to her nose she smells tarsk fat (thanks ST) so she washed it off all the wounds and replaced it with the right healing salve she has placed 3 jars of this tarsk fat to one side, Healers please check your jars of healing salve cos some of it may be just tarsk fat
Master Raz sleeps deeply on His porch after drinking two botas of water, she has left another bota by His side should He wake and need a drink

Tended to both Shoko and Arlon this night after a thalarion got loose in camp.

Removed some glass shards from Shoko's prosterior, cleaned the cuts and applied healing salve.

Cleaned a gsh on Arlon's head and applied healing salve.  Advised him to soak in a warm bath tomorrow after he took a blow to the back from the tail of the creature.

After echo took a rather nasty ride/run by holding onto the chain that CHAOS was attached to, he was treated for road rash and abrasions... I also gave him some valerian, while I removed rocks and other debris that the antiseptic didn't remove... Leticia helped me bandage his wounds, the abrasions were covered in honey, the others were slathered with agrimony salve... his arms and legs, on both sides, along with his backside were nearly covered... he's resting comfortably, and should be up and back to his chores in about a day or two, depends on how his more intense wounds heal...

After CHAOS got loose, Nex chased him down, leaping from the saddle of a filly onto CHAOS and bringing him down before he got to the herds.  CHAOS fell on her.

Her right arm was broken in two places.  It was set and splinted with two splints, her arm placed in a sling to keep it still.

Her right leg also suffered a compound fracture.  That was set as well, a full leg splint applied, and the wound where the bone broke through the skin stitched.

She also suffered a scalp laceration, I believe Arlon stitched and cleaned that up.  She was unconscious when I left her in the medwagon, but she wasn't alone.  Poppa kept a watchful eye on her all night.
