"Within the circle of each man's sword," say the codes of the warrior, "therein is each man a Ubar."

It is not uncommon among the Wagon Peoples, that when a stranger approaches their territories, the warriors will gamble on who will get the privellege to take the strangers life.

In such sport, the honor is awarded to whomever the lance falls.

Living in the land of sun, sand, and Thassa breezes, where the only rule is common sense.  What's not to love?

Actually impalement is considered an honorable death and thusly why a SLAVE can never be impaled, only frees.

ACTUALLY

When one who is a slave strikes a free person the penalty is not infrequently death by impalement, preceded by lengthy torture.
---Assassin of Gor, 5:74

...A man who refused to practice his livelihood or strove to alter status without the consent of the Council of High Castes was, by definition, an outlaw and subject to impalement.
---Tarnsman of Gor, 3:46

Both slave and free could be found a sentence of death by impalement, depending on gorean civil law...

for to enter a city without permission or without satisfactory reason is tantamount to a capital crime, and the punishment is usually a swift and brutal implement. Pikes on the walls of Gorean cities are often surmounted with the remains of unwelcome guests. The Gorean is suspicious of the stranger, particularly in the vicinity of his native walls. Indeed, in Gorean the same word is used for both stranger and enemy.
---Outlaw of Gor, 6:49

Civil Law as it pertains to the City extends only to its walls

Ahhh, gotta love the John Norman contradictions, but it is true that various laws on Gor are the same as here on Earth and are city-country specific.  While most times a slave would not be impaled:

Quote
Lady Claudia shuddered. In such an impalement, the female is usually simply set upon the spear. It is not necessary to bind them, as, straightened, they cannot reach the spear nor obtain any leverage for removing themselves from it. They are held upon it, helplessly, by their own weight. Usually such a fate is visited only upon a free woman. It is thought that it gives them time to consider and repent their ways. A slave girl, on the other hand, would be more likely, like meat, to be thrown to sleen.  ~ Renegades of Gor, pages 223-224

.... as the quote stated, a slave most likely would simply be thrown to sleen

the sleen being avid Hunters

[as to the contradictions... the words "Most Likely" keep it from being a contradiction.. they may.. or may not but must likely in this place would be meat for the sleen... i don't see it as a contradiction rather than a differing of area.. such as.. like Tuchuk,.. and wagon people see piercing ears as barbaric and don't do it other than for punishment usually.. while other places in gor says it enhances a slaves sexuality ...different cultures and whatnot.... its all good..grins]
