Now that it's over
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:42:24 PM »
Now that the biggest hurdle has been surmounted, both physically and mentally, I will let the rest of my family in on what's been going on.  In early February I was diagnosed with the most common form of breast cancer women get.  It's a non-invasive form known as DCIS.  It was discovered during a routine mammogram.  Ladies, take note, I didn't get my mammo done in 2006.  If I had, this might have been discovered sooner and the treatment may have been much different.

To make a long story very short, I had a mastectomy in the beginning of April (just one, not both).  I am now undergoing reconstruction, which may or may not be done by the gathering, so I may have a very different look this year!  I will either be lopsided or smaller and perky!

All the pathology has come back and been confirmed.  The nodes were negative and the margins were clean.  This means no chemo and no radiation treatments will be necessary.

If any one wants to learn more about any of the processes I am undergoing, options available, and other lifestyle changes I am having to make, please don't hesitate to send me an IM or pm me in camp.

You have been and continue to be a strong woman, and your willingness to share your triumphs-- and that's very much what this is!-- and the trial of going through what you have inspires.  You've strength in you to spare.  My love and support to you always.

Way to go Kels...

yearly Mammogram is a necessity once your hit that right age.   I had a va doctor inform me that he didn't feel doing them every year was necessary...my new doctor a female.... looked at me and said you have got to be kidding.... you will have a pap every year and you will have a mammogram every year..... I have been on hormone replacement therapy now for two years as having already battled cervical cancer made it a necessity..... you have a responsibility to yourself first and formost ladies to take care of you.  something I know we often put aside simply because we think we don't have time.... but what about what happens if you don't take care of you and then you are left with doing nothing more than talking about how precious time is.  Oct 8th this year I am  16 years free from cervical cancer... I want to see possum walk down that isle beside her father and me get to sit there with all my family and bawl like a baby.  I want to hold the first grandson from my own son....to know that I can spoil him and send him home to be my sons holy terror.

as Women we fight no matter what. after all.... we are life... we bring life....we encourage life. and we live.

~huggles you gently~

Sis, nothing can change who and what you are... if you are lopsided ~shrugs~ well then your lopsided, it has nothing to do with who you are inside... I am really happy to hear things turned out as well as they did... and yes, I agree with you on the mammogram... ~taps my foot at you~ Just remind me that I have to go down that road shortly myself... It sucks having all sorts of cancer running through the family, but it's something that is a necessity, and while it might be uncomfortable, in the end, it may save a life... ~smiles softly~ I had my scare with colon cancer two years ago...

I love you Sis as you were then, and as you are now... unless they removed a part of your soul and your personality during the masectomy ~shrugs~ then you need not to care what others think... ~huggles you tightly~ though this just means I have to find something for you to torture the men and woobie at the gathering... ~winks~

well, I figured it was time for an update.  For those interested, the expansion process is completed.  I now have a one grapefruit sitting high up on my chest....that sucker doesn't even move when  I jump up and down...*lol*

The second surgery has been scheduled for mid August.  At that time they will take out the expander and put in the implant.  They will also reshape the other side to try and make them match....it would look a little strange to have one sitting up high and the other one low...*chuckles*

When  this is all over and the doc gives the ok, I am going to Victoria's Secret and buy a pretty lacy bra....I will avoid those eye injuring thongs though!  I knew those things were bad for your health!!

Love to all of you!

Kelsey
