Laptop help
« on: July 21, 2008, 05:44:18 PM »
well I am home from vacation.. did not spend all my $$ and made a little too.. so I am shopping for laptops.  I really dont know much about them.  I did find this one:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion-dv6871us-15-4-Widescreen-Entertainment-Laptop-DV6871US/sem/rpsm/oid/207704/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do#prodspecs

It has the video card I wanted and burns dvds.. but have heard bad things about vista.. not that you can get it with anything else now a days.. but how does the speeds and such look?  anyone that is laptop savvy can tell me what they think would be great.
Thank you
Lil

I dont know why everyone hates Vista so badly...... even if you have vista you can set it to run like windows xp.... I read just now that you can set it to run like win98 but Im not about to try that....

Ive had vista on my laptop ever since I bought it almost a year and a half ago....

And I love it!

Vista doesn't like a lot of my games... so I'm sticking with XP till they get that figured out. *nods* I MUST be able to play my Pirates games!

Ha!  You have now hit the laptop guru.

I am very familiar with laptops, especially how they bounce down stairs or how much force it takes to shatter the LCD screen, even how far they slide across both carpet and hardwood floors.

Anywhoo...stay away from Vista unless you are running beaucoup memory, at least 2 gb DDR2 at 667Mhz.  But, you need room to add to it as well.  Vista requires a basic memory requirement of 2gb to run effectively.  The next is processor.  Stay away from 32 bit processors, thats about 3 years old.  IF you can get it, do a 2 Ghz minimum processor speed.

Best thing for you, stay away from premanufactured laptops you get from circuit city or best buy.  They load the damn things full of crap programs from the dealership that simply flood the startup and normal processing.

If you cant afford a custom built laptop, look into Alienware, Dell XPS, Toshiba.  Those are going to be the better ones for you and all fast, reliable and upgradeable.

Raz

btw...you can order your laptop with XP and dont have to get Vista.  Vista you will find on just about every laptop in the retail stores because they are under a contract with microsoft.

Screw Vista.

Better off investing in ballbats to beat Bill Gates about the head and shoulders.
